Hurricane Bertha Damage

Bertha rampaged up the Eastern Seaboard from North Carolina to Maine July 12 and July 13, knocking down trees and power lines, tearing roofs off homes and spawning tornadoes. Earlier on July 8 and July 9, Hurricane Bertha brushed the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico in the northern Caribbean with 85 to 90 mph winds. Hurricane Bertha caused an estimated $100 million in damage in areas along the Atlantic from South Carolina to New England.

Bertha chewed its way along much of Eastern Seaboard, leaving behind destruction and power outages from North Carolina to Maine.

The following states have released preliminary damage reports caused by Bertha's onslaught:

North Carolina

Storm report from July 12:

  • Doppler radar indicated that 8 to 10 inches fell in an area between Jacksonville and Williamston.
  • 70 mph wind gust reported in Ogden at 12:21 p.m.

Damage reports for July 12:

  • The Washington waterfront was flooded.
  • Overwash north of Hatteras Village was about a foot and half deep.
  • The Overwash at Frico Pier was reaching route 12.
  • Numerous trees are down and the power is out in many eastern parts of the state.
  • Wards Creek bridge on U.S. 70 at Otway is out.
  • Homes in low areas in Cedar Point were 1/3 to 1/2 under water.
  • Businesses on the Swansboro waterfront were under 5 to 6 feet of water.
  • Roofs have been blown off numerous homes and buildings between Swansboro and Atlantic Beach.
  • Power poles have snapped in Emerald Isle.
  • The Surf City pier has been destroyed.
  • Scotts Hill reported flooding over Scotts Hill Loop Road.
  • Hurricane Bertha spawned a couple of tornadoes shortly after landfall in N. Jackson, Winnabow, Newport and near New Bern.
  • Unconfirmed tornado knocked trees down on houses in Cary. The damage path was two-miles long stretching from near the Cary mall west to downtown Cary.

Virginia

Storm reports for July 12:

  • Elizabeth City Coast Guard station reported a wind gust to 55 mph at 9 p.m.
  • Cape Henry and the south island of the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel reported wind gusts to 55 mph.
  • A Hampton Roads TV station reported winds to 57 mph.
  • Chesapeake Light reported wind gusts to 65 mph with 11 ft seas.

Damage reports for July 12:

  • Tornado confirmed in Moonfield section of Smithfield between 10:15 and 10:20 p.m., by Smithfield Police Dept. Path width 500-600 yards. Damage to 10-15 homes. No injuries reported.
  • Unconfirmed tornado reported at 11:15 p.m., in Severn. Eyewitness reported a swirling mass tore an awning off her house and the tops off a few trees.
  • Unconfirmed tornado cut a short path through a Woods Crossroads neighborhood at 11:25 p.m., uprooting a tree onto a car. Several tops of large trees blown and twisted off.

Damage reports for July 13:

  • Unconfirmed tornado damaged 6-7 mobile homes injuring 9 people in Edwardsville at 1:15 a.m. Some mobile homes were torn off their foundations and blown into the woods. Many trees were blown down. All injuries were minor.
  • Possibly the same tornado blew down many trees in Mundy Point at 1:25 a.m.
  • Unconfirmed report of a tornado in King George at 2:30 a.m., by King George Fire Dept. and the National Weather Service. Metal shed demolished and garage missing near intersection of State Routes 610 and 631.
  • Damaged homes and uprooted trees caused by 80 mph wind gust in Fredericksburg, reported by Emergency Operations Center at 3:03 a.m.

Maryland

Damage reports for July 13:

  • Unconfirmed tornado lopped off tree tops and caused structural damage to houses in Charlottehall at 2:30 a.m.
  • Confimed tornado blew the roofs off several houses and a barn and collapsed a garage in Hughesville at 2:30 a.m.
  • Strong winds in Dunkirk toppled 20 to 30 large trees at 3:30 a.m.

New Jersey

Storm report for July 13:

  • 6.59 inches of rain fell in 24 hours at Estell Manor.

Connecticut

Storm report for July 13:

  • As of 11:30 a.m., winds had gusted to 32 mph at Groton and Oxford.

Rhode Island

Storm report for July 13:

  • As of 11:30 a.m., winds had gusted to 35 mph at Quonset Point State Airport in North Kingstown, 30 mph at Providence, and 29 mph at Block Island.
  • Waterspout reported near Narragansett at 3:27 p.m.
  • Wind gust to 71 mph at Barrington, shortly before 5 p.m.
  • wind gust to 74 mph at Middletown at 8:22 p.m.

Damage report for July 13:

  • Wind damage occurred in Woonsocket with numerous trees down. Estimated gusts to 60 mph per storm spotter.

Massachusetts

Storm reports for July 13:

  • Two waterspouts reported at 4:40 p.m. near Martha's Vineyard.
  • Ship run aground near Mattapoisett at 3:50 p.m.
